Sanremo: art and culture to be discovered

  • Among the buildings of a religious tradition a stay in Sanremo must include a visit to the Cathedral of San Siro, the early Christian church known for the bell tower of 12 bells, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa, which is located directly above the Pigna hill where the city was born and always considered a reference point for citizens and sailors and Russian Orthodox Church church wanted by the Russian nobility.
  • Do not miss the Collegiate Church of San Siro, the sec. XIII-XIV centuries, the Romanesque-Gothic ogival portal splayed mullioned windows and central rose. Inside there are paintings and sculptures of the '500. Also interesting is the adjacent medieval Baptistery, remodeled in the Baroque period.
  • Bellevue Palace, built in the late '800, intended to welcome luxury hotel for many years now the Town Hall.
  • Palazzo Borea d'Olmo, located a few meters from the Teatro Ariston, and a symbol of the Baroque in Liguria houses the Archaeological Museum. The Palace boasts an 'important sixteenth-century portal where space is a Madonna of Montorsoli, while inside can admire the frescoes by Giovanni Battista Merano.
  • Villa Nobel, Alfred Nobel's last residence, built in 1870 in Moorish style which is now used as a Museum of Discovery 800 and the seat of important cultural events. A few meters from Villa Nobel space is also King Villa, built in the first decade of the 900 and converted into a hotel for a long time and now being renovated after a fire.
  • Villa Ormond, known for its lush park with exotic plants and sought who have found their habitat.
  • On the hills overlooking the Course of English is Devachan Castle, built in the late '800 Liberty style that has a long history full of vicissitudes and changes of role. Now the castle is used as a holiday residence.
  • For lovers of archeology Sanremo offers two interesting sites that Matutia Villa and Villa Bussana.
  • Sanremo preserves an ancient part, called Pigna, the medieval city full of narrow streets and houses that date back to the thirteenth century.
